I have just
completed two thirds of Computer Systems Technology program at Northern Alberta
Institute of Technology (NAIT) in Edmonton. Am (almost) ready to tackle the
business world with a new arsenal of skills, including C++ programming, SQL
Server, MS ACCESS in a Client/Server environment, Netware and some Systems
Analysis CASE tools. Huh? What? This artsman has wandered into a definitely
non-artsy field, but I'm having a ball. I might look for a job afterwards, but
could also become an independent consultant and develop business solutions from
my home. Apparently, the demand is quite high for that sort of stuff. No more 6
month deployments (or bush flying either) so, either way, the lifestyle should
be quite acceptable.

I was
surfin' the web page and I was dumbstruck by those photos. Pedro still doesn't
look a day older than that day we got on the 707 at Regina Airport in '72
(except for the 'stache).
My news is, like some of the other notes I was
reading, I am about to be posted down south! Yes, I am weaning myself of the
dole and am moving on from D Hgr to H Hgr. I will be a civilian as of 13 Dec
(not quite true, it's the start of a long terminal leave that takes me to 27
plus a day late next Aug). I have recently been offered and accepted a position
as Nova Scotia's newest air ambulance pilot. Bit of a temporary paycut, but
money's not everything, quality of life is! An aircraft that is only a dozen
years old is real nice (with all kinds of pretty lights, mirrors, bells ,
switches and whistles for Michael to play with). Really interesting work.
Finally, pretty good time off. I'm planning a two week holiday in Feb to indulge
in what you know to be my new religion, downhill skiing.

A bit
overdue on the update front. Note the new e-mail address, doug_konkin@pmc-sierra.com I'm now
running an integrated circuit design shop for PMC-Sierra, which is in the
networking IC business. Head office is in Vancouver, but we're still here in
Saskatoon: wouldn't want to turn into a wimp on the west coast.
The
family home has moved, too:

Thanks for keeping up the Class home page: it's a

Update
From: Dennis Kolba dkolba@chat.carleton.ca
To: John
McManus jmcmanus@jmcmanus.com
Editor's Note - A nasty note was sent to Dennis telling him not to
grab all the addresses and spam the boys! Of course, he replied that "spam is
unsolicited mail that other people send" and did not apply to him getting out
the details of his life!
A "Reply to all" in hopes that I might
hear from some of the buds who might not get around to checking out the web page
(but you should -- good job there by Rocky). Since opting for Freedom 41 (aka
FRP 96), I've seen a little of the world by bicycle, skis, hiking boots, and
sailboat, thinking that these were the sort of meditative activities which might
be conducive to a sudden inspiration as to what I'd like to be when I grow up.
Well, they might be, but it hasn't happened yet. (The inspiration, I mean. But
with respect to Beastie's final sentence in my '76 Yearbook write-up: not a
problem.) So last year and this I've been (mostly) keeping out of trouble by
taking a full course-load of undergrad courses at Carleton University, half
business (accounting and finance) and half philosophy (ethics and history of
philosophy). And continuing nomadic adventures between semesters. It was great
to do some partying and some skiing and some Stampeding with Don Shaw, Jeff
Poste, and Gary Nevison out in Calgary and the Rockies last winter and again
last summer. All right, I won't keep you from your work any longer. (I've
probably got a term paper or something due tomorrow, too.) Drop me a
line.
Editor's Note - Note the time of the Email -
Dennis probably has a paper due the next day, and has not started
yet!

Good to see
all the work you done and the funny photos....I ain't goin' to no more
reunions...just a bunch of old farts!
I'm still in Nanaimo pretending to
run an engineering company....Duncan Industrial Engineering Inc. We've got an
office in Prince George and just opened one up in Edmonton too, so Alberta isn't
safe now either....
I've been spending my spare
time trying to keep Pete Hartley's old '58 Triumph on the road...I bought it
from him a couple of years ago... Vern Archibald owned the thing when we were
still in college, so the car's got some sentimental value. I've only had to
rebuild the engine twice! Click on the car to get a large image.
Keep in
touch!

Just had
lunch with Kerry Watkin and Dave Pentney and they told me about your page. Great
work! It is great to see so many of the boys in touch with each other on the
web. The three of us are working on getting a class fund started and Dave, Kerry
or I will put out the info as a package soon. In the meantime, all are welcome
to contact me for news. Now that I am a civvy I too am on the web: qubean@kingston.net
I really got a kick
out of reading the fainting memo!

Since I
have been in the US (DC actually) for quite some time, I thought I would check
back into the Class of 76 site. Since DJ and his family were on the homepage, my
thoughts turned to the recent disaster. Any word from DJ, and do we have any way
of finding out ... or helping out? lawrence.okeefe@ac.com

I bumped
into Rick Hardy out at NDMC the other day (old guys physio day) and he told me
about your site. I've just finished crawling around it and it is great. It is
amazing how a few words from someone can trigger a flood of memories - thanks
for taking the initiative to put the site together.
For my sins, I am
currently working in COS J3 at NDHQ. My main task is to try and write the
doctrine that explains how we do business - then I try to get people to read it
- then maybe use it. Well one out of three ain't bad!
If you would like
to add me to your list, my current e-mail address is: mailto:ab241@issc.debbs.ndhq.dnd.ca
Keep
in touch

Notes from the
scribe:
A mini unplanned reunion of the "boys" was held today at the
Winnipeg O Mess over lunch hour. I was dining and discussing Information
Management with Bruce Baldwin baldwin_family@hotmail.com when
John (I'm here to bring you a new Supply System) Olsen walked in. He left his
card, but "is not into the Internet" yet. Here is his info:

Also, Michael 'the Great' Gropp has
asked permission to be listed in our Homepage. Now, I would not normally give in
to a request like this, but seeing that he flys Sea Kings, and is remorseful for
having chosen CMR over RMC after Roads (my words!), I told him I could list him.
So you can reach him at mjgropp@hotmail.com

I'm
presently the 'SAR Guy' working for the CAS (Chief Air Staff) in NDHQ but, after
20 years and 7 postings as a SAR puke, will move this summer to the Constitution
Building to be the 'CADET Guy'. Just imagine, 55,000 bright young Canadians in
the throes of adolesence, and another 6 or 7 thousand CIC officers under the
care of a guy who flies (flew!) yellow airplanes. Go figure. Anyway, I've now a
new favourite 'Favourites' Web Site.
Thanx

Glad to see someone
has the technical ability to figure out all these complexities so the "arts-men"
like me can simply organize the parties. Speaking of which...
We are
planning on having a:
"Class of 76 Family BBQ Day"
at our place in Ottawa (Aylmer) on 14 Jun
98 - noon to ???. We expect 50 or so buds and families for some horse shoes,
bocce ball, maybe a swim, etc. perhaps even a beer. Anyone interested in more
info can call Mike Maissoneuve, Bob Morrin or me.
Cheers

I'm taking Computer
Systems Technology at NAIT. It is an accelerated program for people with
work-related experience, and I will graduate at the end of April 1999. Enjoying
it very much. The only drawback is that I'm having to learn to program on
(shudder) Windoze machines. So I'm looking to buy a Windows machine right now,
as the first semester is drawing to a close and I'm about to launch into the
wonderful world of C++, Visual Basic, Java, etc, all on an Intel platform.
